Venue General FAQ

  • Royal Saxon is located at 545 Church St, Richmond VIC 3121, in the heart of Richmond's dining and retail precinct. We're easily accessible from across the surrounding suburbs, with the 78 tram and East Richmond train station just a short walk away, and street parking available nearby.

  • Royal Saxon is your local pub in the heart of Richmond — a welcoming place where locals come together for great food, cold drinks and a friendly atmosphere, every day of the week. With multiple spaces throughout the venue, there's always somewhere great for a casual drink at the bar, a family dinner, or a larger group gathering and celebration.

  • There's always something on at Royal Saxon. Here's what's on each week:

    Monday from 5pm: $23 Classics, plus trivia from 7pm

    • Tuesday from 5pm: Steak Night: 250g Porterhouse with chips, chimichurri slaw & peppercorn jus for $26, or upgrade to a 300g Scotch Fillet for $38

    • Wednesday: Pasta & Pinot: choose from 4 pastas, served with a glass of wine or a tap beer

    • Thursday from 5pm: Parma Night: classic or spicy parma with chips & salad for $23

    • Sunday from 12pm: Sunday Roast for $29pp

  • Our kitchen is open seven days a week:

    • Monday to Thursday — 11:30am to 9pm

    • Friday — 11am to 9pm

    • Saturday — 12pm to 9pm

    • Sunday — 12pm to 7pm

  • Yes to both!

    Happy Hour runs every single day of the week: Monday to Friday, 3–6pm, and Saturday to Sunday, 2–5pm, with reduced prices on selected wines, beers, cocktails and spirits.

    On the entertainment front, a live DJ plays every Saturday from 5pm. It's a brilliant night out and worth keeping in mind when planning a Saturday function.

  • Royal Saxon is Richmond's home of live sport. With multiple screens throughout the venue, including a 3m mega screen in the Courtyard, there's never a bad seat in the house when the big games are on. We're especially passionate about AFL, and whether it's a Friday night blockbuster or an ANZAC Day clash, there's no better place in Richmond to watch the footy with a cold drink in hand and a parma on the way.

     Got a group coming in for the game? Walk-ins are welcome across the venue, or book a space to watch together. And for groups who have booked an exclusive function space, we can adjust the volume so your event isn't competing with the commentary, giving you the best of both worlds.

     Heading to the game at the G? Join us before or after, we're just a short 15-minute walk away.

  • Yes. Several of our spaces are wheelchair accessible at ground level, including The Courtyard, The Front Bar, The Dining Room and The Corner. We also have ambulant bathrooms on-site.

  • Street parking is available on Church Street and surrounding streets, please check local signage for time limits. East Richmond train station is within easy walking distance, and the 78 tram runs along Church Street, making us accessible via public transport from across Melbourne.

  • Yes! Well-behaved, four-legged friends are welcome to join us in The Courtyard or Laneway. Please let our team know in advance if you'd like to bring your dog along.

  • Yes, we're open on all public holidays. Please note a 10% surcharge applies on these days, and trading hours may vary around the holiday season. We recommend checking our website or social media for the latest updates.

  • Yes. Minors are welcome at Royal Saxon until 9pm, provided they are accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times, in line with our venue licence conditions.

  • Yes. Highchairs are available for our younger guests. Simply let a team member know on arrival, or indicate it when making your reservation, and we'll have one ready for you.

  • Yes, change tables are available on-site for guests with little ones.

  • Yes. Our kids' menu is available, just ask a team member and they'll be happy to help.

  • Yes. Melbourne weather being what it is, we've made sure our outdoor spaces are well-equipped with heaters, and our Courtyard features a retractable roof, so you and your guests can stay comfortable year-round, rain, hail or shine.

Bookings FAQ

  • Walk-ins are always welcome, we're a spacious venue with plenty of room. That said, we recommend booking ahead if you'd like to secure a specific spot, if you're coming with a larger group, or if you're joining us for a popular night like Saturdays. Bookings can be made at royalsaxon.com.

  • Standard dining reservations are allocated a 2-hour booking duration. If you require additional time, please contact our team and we'll do our best to accommodate your request.

  • Yes. For groups of 10–30 guests looking for a more casual bar experience, we can reserve a dedicated area with a combination of seating and standing room, subject to availability.

  • Absolutely. Our Courtyard, with its 3m mega screen, is the best place in Richmond to catch the action live and loud. We recommend booking ahead for major sporting events to secure the best viewing positions.

  • Yes. To ensure the best dining experience for everyone at the table, groups of 20 or more guests are required to dine on one of our set menus. Most dietary requirements can be accommodated.

  • Guests can order via QR code from their table or directly at the bar — this helps us provide faster, more efficient service, particularly during busy periods. If you'd prefer table service, just let us know and we'll be happy to assist.

  • Absolutely. Royal Saxon is a great place to celebrate in Richmond. We offer six distinct private and semi-private function spaces, plus exclusive whole-venue hire, and our experienced, friendly events team makes the whole process simple and effortless. Whether you're planning an intimate dinner for 20 or a landmark celebration for 200, we'll help tailor an event to suit your occasion and budget.

  • We cater for a wide variety of occasions, including:

  • We recommend enquiring as early as possible, particularly for weekend dates, peak seasons (November through January) and larger spaces, which book out quickly. Enquiring 3–6 months in advance is ideal for significant events, though we'll do our best to accommodate shorter lead times where availability permits.

  • Yes. Many of our spaces can be decorated and personalised to suit your theme. Please discuss your plans with our events team ahead of the event so we can advise on what's permitted, arrange setup access, and ensure everything runs smoothly on the day.

  • Yes. You're welcome to bring a celebration cake to your function. We'll take care of the cutting, plating and serving, with cream and coulis included. A cake cutting fee of $3 per person applies.

Functions Food & Beverage FAQ

  • We offer canapé packages to suit different event styles and budgets, ranging from $33pp to $55pp, with an optional dessert add-on available.

  • Our $59 Set Menu includes arrival breads and your choice of 2 alternate drop entrées and mains. Desserts can be added for an additional $9 per person. The menu is designed to provide a seamless dining experience for larger groups and can accommodate most dietary requirements.

  • Our standard beverage package includes beer, house wines and soft drinks, priced at:

    • $48pp for 2 hours

    • $58pp for 3 hours

    • $68pp for 4 hours

    To upgrade your beer and wine selections, add $15pp to each hour. Selected spirits add-ons are also available.

  • Yes. If you'd prefer to keep it simple, you can open a bar tab with a selection of beverages from our menu and set a spending limit. Just speak with our events team when planning your event to get this sorted.

  • Yes. All beverage packages include soft drinks and juices, Carlton Zero (0.0% beer), Hills Cider (<0.5% ABV) and sparkling cuvée, ensuring all guests, including those who don't drink alcohol, are well catered for throughout your event.

  • Yes. Our function menus include gluten-free (GF), gluten-free option (GFO), dairy-free option (DFO), vegetarian (V) and vegan option (VO) selections across both canapé and set menus. Please advise our events team of any specific dietary requirements when planning your event so we can ensure all guests are well catered for.

  • Royal Saxon has a full kitchen on-site, so all food for functions is prepared and served by our team. Outside catering is not permitted. The good news is our function menus cover a range of styles and budgets, from canapé packages starting at $33pp through to our set menu, so there's plenty to choose from. You're always welcome to bring a celebration cake!

Functions Bookings & Payments FAQ

  • Yes. A deposit is required to confirm your booking and secure your preferred date and space. Our events team will provide full details on deposit amounts and payment terms when confirming your event.

  • We understand guest numbers can change. Please keep our events team updated as your event approaches, final numbers are typically required a few days before your event. Our team will advise on any minimum spend requirements that may apply to your chosen space.
